What to Wear Under a Dress So Your Thighs Don't Chafe

It's the reason a lot of people stop wearing dresses in summer. Twenty minutes in, your thighs are raw, and the dress you liked in the mirror becomes something you're counting down to take off.

Most of the advice is about soothing it after the fact. This is about the layer underneath. (If you want the why — friction, heat, what's actually happening to your skin — we covered that in tired of thigh chafing.)

The options, honestly

Nothing. Works until it doesn't. Skin on skin plus heat plus a bit of sweat is exactly the combination that causes chafing, so on a warm day this is the setup that guarantees it.

Anti-chafe balm or powder. Genuinely helps, and useful to carry. But it wears off — usually in a couple of hours, faster if you're walking or it's humid. Good as a backup, unreliable as your plan.

Shapewear. Puts fabric between your thighs, which is the right idea. But it's usually compressive, often synthetic, and traps heat — and heat is half of what causes chafing. A lot of people trade rubbing for overheating.

Cycling shorts. Closer. The length is right. But they're built for sport: thick waistbands, sometimes a padded seat, seams in places you'll notice after a few hours under a light dress.

Long-cut cotton boxer briefs. Fabric between your thighs, breathable, and nothing extra. This is the boring answer and it's the one that holds up over a full day.

What to look for

  • Enough length. The hem has to sit past where your thighs actually touch. Too short and it rides into the gap and stops helping.
  • Breathable fabric. Cotton over synthetic. Trapped heat makes it worse.
  • A leg that stays down. A leg that rolls up is a leg that isn't doing its job by lunchtime.
  • Flat seams. You'll feel a bulky inner seam through a thin dress.
  • No compression unless you want it. Compression isn't what stops chafing — coverage is.

The 11cm. Long enough to cover where the thighs actually meet.

Where ours fits

Our 11cm boxer briefs were made for exactly this. An 11cm inseam covers the part of the thigh that rubs, in 95% organic cotton so it breathes, with a waistband that doesn't dig and a leg that doesn't roll. No padding, no compression, nothing that shows through a dress.

They also have our pad-friendly gusset, which matters if you're trying to solve both problems on the same day.

5cm, 7cm, 11cm. For chafing, the 11cm is the one.

The 7cm works for some people depending on where your legs meet. If chafing is the whole reason you're buying, go 11cm.

A few things that help regardless

  • Dry your thighs properly after showering — damp skin chafes faster.
  • If it's already sore, let it heal before the next long day out. Chafed skin chafes again more easily.
  • Keep a balm in your bag anyway. Belt and braces.

Chafing isn't something your body does wrong. It's friction, heat and the wrong layer. Two of those you can fix before you leave the house.
